The Last Timerunner
Summary of the book »The Last Timerunner«
The novel continues the story from another science fiction book I wrote
years ago: »The Timerunners«. There a group of people finds a number of special
abilities in themselves, that come from the awakening of an extradimensional
entity following the shockwave of a supernova explosion. Let’s call those
abilities kind of magical or supernatural. Another storyline in this first book
tells about magicians from a long ago past who were trying to timetravel to a
future where their dying magic would work again. In their own time the magic
disappeared due to the vanishing of said entity into a long sleep. Those are
the actual timerunners. In our present the two groups meet each other and find
opposition not only in the entity but the local police and government. They
fight against the odds and learn from each other until finally the
extradimensional entity offers them a way into other worlds where magic is more
normal. There is only one problem: One of the timerunners from the past (it’s
not exactly our past, but that’s beside the point) has gone evil and
uses his power accordingly. Even if all of them left our world, he would remain
and continue to be a danger.
They all but one went to other worlds (that are other books of mine) and
that was the end of the first book.
Now we enter the new book. A certain family of three likes to come to
Cyprus every year and the book begins with the preparations of their next trip.
The main character, Martin W. Melnik, is a successful editor. He has only some
nightmares and uncanny visions, so don’t mention it. Well, on the island they
meet an old friend every time the get there, a physicist named Tarakian.
Of course, the nightmares and strange visions mean that Melnik is the
last one of the good timerunners and he killed the evil one years ago. Then he
blocked his own memory of his adventures and settled down. Why does he wake up
now?
It’s that extradimensional thing again. It sees how humanity is destroying
the planet with climate change and everything, but it won’t or can’t intervene.
So it reactivates the last remaining mage on Earth and orders him to save the
planet. No pressure.
After he has remembered himself, Melnik goes about the business of
establishing an organization to do just this. It’s headquarters are on Cyprus where
the family has moved to and his friend there plays a key-role in accomplishing
it. Of course it helps that Melnik is now in the possession of various bank
accounts of the evil timerunner he secured years ago. There is resistance
against his plans, but with his magical powers he can overcome it. Melnik gets
Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson and a number of others on the table and things
proceed after a certain president, a North-Korean leader and others are out of
the game. He has to travel back in time at a point to prevent nuclear war, but
again, no pressure.
With the help of a lot of money and a bit of alien technology they are
able to build CO2-scrubbers into flying pyramids (anti-gravity
powered) at the end. Earth and mankind will be saved and make it to the stars
at last.
